Horseshoe Crab Count 2022

June 14, 2022, 9:00 pm

During the strawberry super moon, members of the MBC got intimate with the wildlife in our waters! We traveled to Pikes Beach in Westhampton to help Cornell Cooperative Extension Marine Program count, measure, determine age and tag spawning horseshoe crabs. Thousands of these animals spawn on the beaches of Long Island during the full and new moons of May and June every year. These ancient creatures are an important part of the ecosystem and are regularly threatened by poachers. We hope to set up a future site to count and tag the species here in Mastic Beach! It’s a sight to behold and a great way to get intimately involved in the lifecycle of the animals and ecology that surrounds us!
